Over the years much has been written about Pueblo cultures and their reverence for the heavens, particularly the sun and the moon. An emerging and often overlooked perspective is that specific stars and constellations also serve as powerful forces in Pueblo life.
In Secrets of the Pueblo Universe, Mark Raney explores stellar connections to Pueblo ceremonial life. He matches ancient rock, pottery and kiva art to constellations and then shows cross tribal patterns between ceremonials and stellar position. Daytime ceremonies relate to stellar position at sunrise and sunset or vesper ceremonies relate to stellar positions at sunset. His study was enhanced when he found the main ceremonial gods of the Tewa were in a certain section of the Milky Way. The location meant that they were not random entities scattered throughout the universe, and increased the significance of his findings. He then ties the star entities to native legends and explores possible relationships to the Maya.
The book has over 40 illustrations by W.H. Brandenburg a well known New Mexico artist, along with 24 star charts with native image overlays produced by Arizona astronomer Ric Alling. To improve the visual quality of the illustrations and star charts eighty pound paper has been used though out.
